Finding the Fun in Fractions

Product Description

“Why is there suddenly one number on top of another?”

“Why can’t I just add all the numbers I see?”

“Why do I only add the top and not the bottom numbers?”

“Why? Why? Why?”

Children often say that they hate fractions. They hate it because it makes no sense them. They are confused by how different fractions are from everything they have learnt. Yet, fractions are the basis of many mathematical concepts – decimals, percentages, ratios. Difficulties with fractions unfortunately lead to difficulties with all those other concepts because in Math, each new concept introduced is based on the assumption that previous concepts have already been mastered.

In the months of May and June, Hils Learning is running a series of five 3-hour workshops on Saturdays for children who struggle with fractions. Each workshop will feature different techniques to facilitate a deeper understanding of fractions by providing participants with:

* Real life encounters and hands-on experiences with fractions

* Games to reinforce what has been learnt

* Giveaway packs to carry forward what has been learnt at home

Each workshop includes:

* A 20-minute assessment prior to the commencement of the first workshop

* A 20-minute parent consultation immediately after each workshop (12.00pm – 12.20pm) to enable parents to practice techniques learnt during the workshop
